Accutane is an oral form of vitamin A that helps your skin to renew faster. This medicine is prescribed only for severe cases of nodular acne. The patients need to prove that they already tried other methods and were unsuccessful, as Accutane has been reported to cause serious birth defects in unborn babies (their heart, brain, ears and skull can get affected). Every woman of child-bearing potential must use at least two different methods of birth control to avoid getting pregnant while taking this medicine. If you use a hormonal method of birth control avoid taking St. John’s wort, as this supplement may lead to breakthrough bleeding.

It is not known exactly whether Accutane can pass into breast milk – if you are breastfeeding do not start the treatment without previously discussing it with your doctor. It’s not recommended to have laser skin treatment when taking Accutane and during half a year after taking the last dosage. The patient is usually provided with a month supply of medicine, which should be taken exactly as recommended by your health care provider. Do not share this medicine with people to whom it hasn’t been prescribed as it may have serious consequences for their health.
